Venison to become a grocery store staple

Published July 19, 2014

Baltimore, MD – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced that deer meat will soon become available as a food item in supermarkets and grocery stores throughout the country. Pending final approval by the FDA, “venison” as it is commonly known, will become commercially available to the public as early as October, 2014.

The newly formed National Deermen’s Board along with the Federation of State Venison Councils unanimously approved a measure to merge with the National Pedigreed Livestock Council, a move expected to benefit both hunters and consumers alike.

“The introduction of venison into local stores and supermarkets is something we believe the American public has wanted for a long time,” said NDB spokesperson, Michael Fatts. “Venison will be readily available in the meat section alongside beef, pork and chicken, and hunters will no longer have to brave the elements and spend weekends away from their families in order to enjoy their favorite deer dishes.”

Deer ranches and farms will soon become operational in several states around the country, including Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, with many more being planned throughout the northeast and southern states in the coming months.

Preliminary reports indicate that ranch operations will consist mainly of the practice of capturing bucks and does alive, rather than shooting them with gun or bow and arrow.  Breeding will be conducted in a controlled environment much like that of the beef and pork industries. Deer slaughterhouses and processing plants will also mimic their beef and pork industry counterparts.

With hunters no longer having to invest so much of their time and money on expensive hunting gear, licenses and lodging, it is expected that deer hunting will soon become a thing of the past with venison being no farther away than a quick trip to the local grocery store.
